Saturday, September 12, 8:00am (MDT) (2:00pm GMT) Orphan Trains
In the early 1850s, thousands of children roamed the streets of New York in search of shelter, food and money, many of them prey to disease and crime. In order to survive, many sold matches, rags, newspapers, or whatever they deemed saleable, and banded together in gangs to protect themselves from street violence.Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell

Saturday, September 19, 8:00am (MDT) (2:00pm GMT) GENTREK: Cluster Research
Collateral Research leaves the focus of the individual and expands to include siblings, cousins, and in-laws. Include neighbors and associates and you've expanded to Cluster Research. Cluster Genealogy is also known as whole family research and involves branching out beyond your pedigree ancestors to research individuals connected to your direct line ancestors and collaterals. The connections may be close, as in marriage, or loose, as in witnesses to a will. Genealogists who research by clusters are the most successful in extending their ancestral lines. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

This week we continue our 4-part series with the next stages in a genealogist's progress. Come see which stages you've gone through and share some of your experiences. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Saturday, September 26, 8:00am (MDT) (2:00pm GMT) GENTREK: Verifying Online Sources
Many budding genealogists are excited when they find that many of the names in their family tree are easily found online. Proud of their accomplishment, they then download all the data they can from these Internet sources, import it into their genealogy software and proudly start sharing their "genealogy" with others. Their research then makes its way into new genealogy databases and collections, further perpetuating the new "family tree" and amplifying any errors each time the source is copied. While it sounded great at first, there is one major problem with this scenario; namely that the family information that is freely published in many Internet databases and Web sites is often unsubstantiated and of questionable validity. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Sunday, September 27, 7:00pm (MDT) (Monday, September 28, 1:00am GMT) Pennsylvania Research Chat: John Casper Stoever and the Early Lutheran Church
    Your Chat Host, Jim Avery.

Sunday, September 27, 8:30pm (MDT) (Monday, September 28, 2:30am GMT) Documenting Your Sources
There are many reasons why people don't document their genealogy, but there are just as many if not more reasons why to document your resources. This is a simple approach to documentation that can be easily tailored to each person's genealogy research style. Documentation should be a part of every genealogists research, but it shouldn't be a chore to do. "Genealogy without documentation is mythology". Your Chat Host, Alanna Fitzgerald-Fant.

Monday, September 28, 8:00pm (MDT) (Tuesday, September 29, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK - Seven Stages in Genealogy Growth, Part 3
This week we continue our 4-part series with the next stages in a genealogist's progress. Each one builds upon the others and sometimes we find ourselves in more than one stage at a time. Come see which stages you've gone through and share some of your experiences. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell

Monday, October 5, 8:00pm (MDT) (Tuesday, October 6, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK - Seven Stages in Genealogy Growth, Part 4
This week we conclude our 4-part series with the latter stages in a genealogist's progress. Dae has discussed these stages with many prominent genealogy professionals over the years -- even a few FASGs. Come see the final stages and where you fit in. And, when the presentation concludes, do share some of your own experiences. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell

    7th WV Cavalry reunion reminder

    Tuesday, June 30, 2009, 11:42 AM [General]
    Posted By: Bob

Hello, folks.   I wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming 7th West Virginia Cavalry Descendants Reunion which will take place on Saturday, July 11th, beginning at 9:00am.  It will be held in the Cultural Center at the State Capital complex in Charleston, West Virginia.   I will be giving a lecture on the 7th that morning in the theater.   In the afternoon, you can tour the newly opened West Virginia State Museum and/or receive assistance on researching your ancestor in the West Virginia State Archives.   All of these activities are in the Cultural Center building.

Some folks have asked how they might be of assistance at the reunion.  Here are a few things that some volunteers can assist with: 1.  Help with registration from 9:00 to 9:30.   (I want to capture a list of the attendees and their ancestors in the 7th) 2.  If you are from the Charleston area, at lunchtime, assist out-of-town folks with directions to nearby restaurants.  There are several within walking distance. 3.  Take photographs during the reunion and share those with me in digital format.  (maybe on a cd)

    Alittle about WV

    Saturday, May 9, 2009, 10:31 AM [General]

West Virginia is one of only two American states formed during the American Civil War (1861-1865), along with Nevada, and is the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state. It was originally part of the British Virginia Colony (1607-1776) and the western part of the state of Virginia (1776-1863), whose population became sharply divided over the issue of secession from the Union and in the separation from Virginia, formalized by admittance to the Union as a new state in 1863. West Virginia was one of the Civil War Border states
