Time in history My favorite time in History would be a toss-up between the 1860's-1890's and 1910's-1930's. Both were a time of great changes and stark contrasts -- and let's face it, some pretty cool outfits! I am still not convinced that I am not descended from a mix of rogue cowboys and gangsters. This is perpetuated by the stories my Nana's brother, Uncle Les, told about Pretty Boy Floyd coming in the backdoor of his restaurant.
Hobbies Hobbies? I'd like to say that genealogy is my hobby, but it's more of an obsession. Hmmm... I'll have to think on that one!

Oh Baby The Places I've Been!

I am thoroughly confused.  When I started doing genealogy, I had to search to find sites that dealt with family history.  Now that I've been through ancestry.com nine ways to Sunday, I'm trying to find a new site that might have different information that I will find helpful.  Somehow, as the prices have gone up over at Ancestry, the availability of new information isn't as forthcoming as I'd hoped.  So, I've been all over the net.  I've been to OneFamily, newspaperarchives.com, genealogy.com, etc.  But, how do you know who you can trust with your information? And, who's to say that after that "free trial" the well won't run dry? I've seen several sites, all of which offer something different.  The one I'm most interested in is called GenealogyBank.com.  It has a 30 day trial,(for $10) and is only $70 A YEAR! That sounds great, and I really want to trust it... especially since it has a LOT of newspapers in which my family may (or may not) be found.  Still, I can't help but hear, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."  Gee, thanks, Dad.

I don't want to pay a zillion dollars for public information, and I don't want a bunch of "free" information that is unsubstantiated.  I just want to continue learning about my family. If you have gone through this, and have some sage advice for a fellow genietracker, PLEASE help.

Amy, I have a subscription to genealogygank.com and have found quite a bit of info on my family. I got the 1 year non-automatically renewable subscription option. After 6 months, I have gone thru my listing of names for obits twice and unless they add some newpapers from PA--I'm not going to get any more info out of that site. I have been usingn it also for my RAOGK requests and for helping others find information--so, it's still a good bargin in my book!

I'm not sure where you are located--but this Family search site is 100% free--

Welcome to my new page! This is the latest in a long line of evidence to prove that I am officially addicted to genealogy.  Ah... and to be surrounded by a bunch of people that have the same disease is great! I can not wait to meet extended family, make new friends and learn some new tips.  Those are my hopes for this page.  So enjoy the pictures; share a story; and remember those who made it easier for us by doing this great search the hard way -- without COMPUTERS!

I love you, Nana! I hope you're watching and that I make you proud!

    RIP

    Hi Amy,

Most of my family is in the Summit, Wayne, Cuyahoga county areas in Ohio. None in Champlain County that I'm aware of (yet).

If you go to genealogybank.com, in the right hand column under "Modern Collections" there is a link for "view the list". It will give you a listing by state of the papers included in the search index and the years covered. They do add more each quarter, but I've not seen many added from Ohio lately.

Yes! Familysearch.org Pilot site is awesome! I have found death certificates for most of my family there.

    Hi Amy,

Thanks for responding to my post. I hope & pray my kids don't toss my stuff out. I think they know how important genealogy has been in my life and hopefully when that day comes It will be a reminder of me. I also hope that at least one of them will take over and find things I couldn't.

The ancestors I mainly search are: McBride,Mintern,Guiry,Archer,Bell,Very, Garrison/Garrettson,Genung,Blake, Carr, McDonnell which are on my side. On my husbands side there are: Fiedler,Carufel,Calkins,Thayer & Kopplin. There are a few branches I look at also, but those are direct lines.

It was nice hearing from another gene-junkie. If I can help in any way on your search, let me know..

    Hi Amy,

I don't know but I did find this:

    ir6b.deepwebtech.com/mdh/...

I hope the link works. Here is the link to the main page if it doesn't.

    www.sos.mo.gov/mdh/

I just did a search on sister's hospital.

Good luck! I have a similar situation in IL on my great-great grandmother. They won't release the records without a court order. I'm like you, if it's been that long that the person's children and grandchildren are gone, who cares?
