    Where are you From?

Wednesday, July 9, 2008, 10:21 AM PST [Creative Writing and Genealogy]

We are all from a place that is more than just a series of images on Google Maps.

Every event in your life that you can remember has shaped who you have become.

George Ella Lyon has written a poem that speaks to this, and is called Where I'm From.

    It begins this way

I am from clothespins, from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride. I am from the dirt under the black porch. (Black, glistening it tasted like beets.)

Nobody is from Clothspins, but can't you see the shape and feel the texture of those in the laundry room at the author's house as a little girl?

    Intrigued?

How about writing your own? ;-D

    In 2003, I did!

Ever since I've been encouraging other budding writers (and genealogists, too!) to do it for themselves.

You might be surprised what you learn about yourself -- your personality, your family history and traits, and those places you grew up in -- as you create your own version of this tale.

I think it would be wonderful to read versions written by Genealogists.

This can be a new way to bond with your spouse, and relatives.

Get your parents, or some Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, or Grandparent, to do it

Think of what you might learn that you didn't know before! ;-D

Frame the piece as a cherished keepsake!

On my Blog you can read MY version, and copy & paste the format you will need to follow.
