    Welcome! Pennsylvania was one of the main ports of entry for many new Americans, especially the German-speaking emigrants, from the 1600's. Many families who then migrated "west" have their start in the Pennsylvania wilderness. Hopefully, we'll find family connections, tips and discussions to knock down that brick wall and lead us to additional information about our ancestor who at one time lived in central Pennsylvania.

    You are so right. I have several lines from the 1600 and 1700's who got their American start in Pennsylvania. They quickly starting moving into Virginia and most settled in Shenandoah County.

    Thanks for starting this group.

    My HUNTER family settled in Cumberland County, PA, from Mill Creek Hundred, Delaware, just on the eve of the Revolutionary War.

    They lived about "one mile west of Shippensburg," according to my 4th great-grandfather's pension application for his service during the War.

    The men in the HUNTER family served their new country during the conflict:

    EDWARD, the father, contracted to provide barrels [he was a cooper as well as a farmer]to the army;

    JOHN served in Capt. Robert Culbertson's Company, under command of Col. John Montgomery, Third Battalion, Cumberland Co.;

    and

    DAVID served under Col. John Allison.

    JAMES was only 12, too young to enlist, although he no doubt wanted to accompany his older brothers.
