    Need some help

    Friday, August 22, 2008, 10:32 AM [General]

Any one in or around Limestone, Peoria, Illinois?  I am needing some assistance with finding a death date or two.

Here's the 411.  I am researching Augustus (b May 1822 Germany/Prussia) and Augusta (b 1822or1832, Prussia) (Springbrother) Cornelius.  Augustus immigrated to USA in 1846 and naturalized in Indiana (I think).  They married 3 Mar 1850 in Peoria county.  According to censuses they lived in Limestone, Peoria, Illinois from about 1860 to 1900.  They lived in Tazewell in 1850.  Between the 1880 census and 1900, Augusta has past away and Augustus is living with Fred Lotman as a boarder.  Then I haven't been able to find him in 1910 so I assume he has passed away.

I am hoping that someone will do the look up for me or advise me on which site to attempt to find them.  I have already tried the ever popular Ancestry.com, Find-a-grave, USgenweb, and Rootsweb.  Short of going to Illinois I am at a loss. ( I live in N.E. OK)

    Thanks

Genealogy - the most addictive mind game

    Friday, August 8, 2008, 10:36 AM [General]

Dont' you just love trying to figure out the censuses.  It's just like a logic problem.  With the misspelling of names, changing of birth dates/years and place, its always something to figure out and a big headache.  Yesterday, I decided to start working on my Hougland family and found it spelled as Hoagland, Hoghland, Hoglana, and Hoglen.  Then Christopher was also CC, Marietta was Hariette and Mary, etc.....  It's enough to make your head hurt, but I love it!

    Civil War Pension records

    Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 3:30 PM [General]

Due to being at a standstill in my research, I have decided to look throught the pension records I have on four of my ggggrandfathers (may be more than 3 greats but you get the idea) and found that I had a death date for William Bottomley's first wife, Annie E. Townsend.  I know that when I rec'd the records originally I read them once if not twice.  Isn't it amazing how you can read something put it away for a while and then read it again and learn so much more!  However sometimes they raise more questions.  My latest is: were there a lot of soldiers that contracted scurvy and ended up dying due to complications of it?  In the 4 records that I have, 2 of my ggggrandfathers had scurvy (diarhea), one died due to injuries to the lower back involving a mule while on patrol, and the 4th I don't remember off hand.

I just love pension records because I can get an insight of how they talked, some physical characteristics, and general understanding of what thier lives were like. The most interesting read of my pension records is that of Charles Shelton's widow, it read like a soap opra script. :-)

    My brick walls

    Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 2:30 PM [General]

I have been working on my family tree now for a couple of years and have come up against a few very stubborn brick walls.

The toughest one is my grandfather's side.  To be completely honest I haven't worked very hard on this line, the Johnson name scares me.  I know that it will be a difficult line to prove and other lines are a lot easier ;-)My grandfather's name was Joseph Oden Johnson.  He was born 29 Aug 1928 in Iowa (at least I think) died 7 Apr 2005 in Iowa City, Iowa.  His parents were Joe Johnson & Mary _____.

Another brick wall is my gggggrandfather, Daniel Kempton b 15 Sep 1813 d 05 Jan 1896 in Burden, Cowley, Kansas.  I don't know for sure where Daniel was born.  The censuses have both Pennsylvania and England.  His son's death cert has that he was born aboard a ship on the Atlantic Ocean between America and Wales.  I haven't been able to find a passenger list for this time frame with any Kempton's on it.  I don't know his parents name so that isn't any help.  I know that he married Eliza Hornish about 1835 ( b PA d 1844 in Rising Sun, Indiana) then Mary Cochran 19 Mar 1846 in Willsbury, VA.  Daniel was a chaplain in the 86th Indiana Infantry Company S.  Here is his locations in census yrs:  1840 Norwalk, Huron, Ohio; 1850 Rising Sun, Huron, Indiana; 1860 Harrison, Boone, Indiana; 1870 Kaw, Jefferson, Kansas; 1875 Kaw, Jefferson, Kansas; 1880 Saylor, Polk, Iowa; 1885 Silver Creek, Cowley, Kansas; 1895 Burden, Cowley, Kansas.
