    Need some help

Friday, August 22, 2008, 10:32 AM EST [General]

Any one in or around Limestone, Peoria, Illinois?  I am needing some assistance with finding a death date or two.

Here's the 411.  I am researching Augustus (b May 1822 Germany/Prussia) and Augusta (b 1822or1832, Prussia) (Springbrother) Cornelius.  Augustus immigrated to USA in 1846 and naturalized in Indiana (I think).  They married 3 Mar 1850 in Peoria county.  According to censuses they lived in Limestone, Peoria, Illinois from about 1860 to 1900.  They lived in Tazewell in 1850.  Between the 1880 census and 1900, Augusta has past away and Augustus is living with Fred Lotman as a boarder.  Then I haven't been able to find him in 1910 so I assume he has passed away.

I am hoping that someone will do the look up for me or advise me on which site to attempt to find them.  I have already tried the ever popular Ancestry.com, Find-a-grave, USgenweb, and Rootsweb.  Short of going to Illinois I am at a loss. ( I live in N.E. OK)

    Thanks

    Donna

You can contact IRAD (Illinois Regional Archives Depository) and they will search for you and mail you the copies. They charge 25 cents per copy, minimum of a dollar. Here is the information for the area you are researching:

    IRAD-University Library Western Illinois University

    1 University Circle

    Macomb, IL 61455-1390

    309-298-2716

I usually call and receive the information in the mail in about a week. Good Luck!

Oh, I forgot, they usually just let you research one name at a time and request up to 2 different documents. I would suggest death certificate and possibly probate records.

This a wonderful service they offer.

Dont' you just love trying to figure out the censuses.  It's just like a logic problem.  With the misspelling of names, changing of birth dates/years and place, its always something to figure out and a big headache.  Yesterday, I decided to start working on my Hougland family and found it spelled as Hoagland, Hoghland, Hoglana, and Hoglen.  Then Christopher was also CC, Marietta was Hariette and Mary, etc.....  It's enough to make your head hurt, but I love it!

I agree with you, Donna! My husband's mother's paternal line is Cauthen, but past ancestors were Cothran, Cotharn, Cauthern, etc. so its very difficult to find them in the census. Then his mother's maternal line is Halton, Haltom, Holtam, etc. Very frustrating sometimes, but well worth it when I do find a match. :) Don't you also hate when you know that they've lived in a certain area for many years and then can't find them in a certain census? LOL It's like they enjoyed changing their name so we couldn't track them! LOL

Thanks so much for your note & especially your friendship! We never know what (or who) we might find in our separate yet common research, right?!

    Donna,

I just received in the mail copies of my husband's grandparents obituaries from the Peoria Public Library. Here is what they said about requesting information:

We ask that you send a written request and include a self addressed stamped envelope for your response. We are able to handle up to 4 requests at one time with an exact date of death.

    Their mailing address is:

    Main St. Branch

    107 N. E. Monroe

    Peoria, IL 61602

Give it a try! All they can do is tell you they can't find anything. Good luck!

Well if you find that they are in the Christ Church cemetery, I'll try to find them next time we go and get a picture for you. We don't go too often, so you have time to find them.
