Notes:   Elias Pitchford married Elizabeth Brown and supposedly she was Cherokee. Elias's father was Daniel Pitchford and he married Rebecca Davis and it is possible that she was either Cattawba or Cherokee. Elias's son Wesley D. Pitchford married Susannah Jane Alford and she was Cherokee out of North Carolina. There is a very strong line of Cherokee blood in our Pitchford family. Daniel Pitchford was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He received land bounty in Kentucky for his service. Daniel's father was also a Revolutionary War Veteran. His name was William Pitchford. William's father was a well educated man because he was the clerk for the Bristol Parish Church in Henrico County, Virginia. This was not common in that day and it meant he came from a good family.
This is so true but so many don't realize that for example: As I was
growing up I spoke Cherokee that I had learnt from my Grandpa and it
was the language that he had learnt from his grandmother. Many, many
years afterwards when I was at a Pow Wow down in Stillwell, OK I was
asked what tribe I was from and I replied Cherokee. They asked me how
I knew and I told them that is what my Grandpa had told me. That I
was Blue Clan and that I was Cherokee. I was then asked if I spoke
the language and I said not very well because I had spoken it as a
child and learnt it from my Grandpa. Of course they wanted me to
prove it. So I spoke a few words that I remembered and all of the
younger people started laughing and telling me that wasn't Cherokee
it was just jibberish. All of a sudden this very old man stepped
forward and told them to be quiet that they were insulting the memory
of my Grandpa and that what I was speaking was Cherokee. He went on
to say that such young fools would not remember the old hills dialect
that had been spoken in the mountains before the removal because the
dialect was lost when the people were scattered. He remembered it
because his grandparents had spoken it and he recogonized the sound
and patterns and tones. His grandmother had passed over in the early
    30's and he remembered her.

What many tribal members forget is that they have also lost many
traditions and languages. Maybe they have not been all lost but just
been hidden along with some of us Lost Birds that are trying to find
our way back home. By making fun of us and not accepting us they are
throwing away a valuable part of themselves. That part of a tribal
member that choose to blend into the white world to survive and who
might have passed down bits and pieces of their knowledge to us. I
truly believe we have to respect the great battle that our brothers
and sisters have had to fight on the reservations and against the
constant tide of being destroyed but I also think it is time that
these same brothers and sisters start to respect the lost birds that
are trying to find their way back.

This is what it is all about. The giving away to help others. The gift
might not have any monetary value but a gift of self many times. The
giving of self is much more valuable than any gift that is boughten.
Many of the people that I pow wow with know that I am in Home Health
Care and that I deal with people all day long and most of them are
elderly and grouchy. I hear all the time they don't understand how I
can do that all week then come out and dance all weekend. What they
don't understand is that to me my work is my giveaway. I am giving of
my self. When I enter the dance circle I am recharging for the next
week. The Creator gives to me more than I give to others. I believe
that Grandfather has put each one of us on the earth for a reason. I
also know that what I do touches more than just the person that I see.
The thing that I believe the strongest is that I am a reflection and
when I die and I see my Grandpa again I want him to be proud of the
reflection that I have given back to the world.

Hi Brian, Good look with your all your searches. Do you have any info on the surname Bass? My greatgrandmother was a Bass. Her father was John M. Bass. He is my brickwall. I can't find parents for him or even find him in any of the census. They were living in Tennessee.
