    GGG Grandmother, Lavenia ? Carter

Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 12:11 AM EST [General]

I have reread my GGG Grandfather Jesse CARTER's pension papers again, & in them it says that about 1853-1854 Jesse, Lavenia & Houston along with friend Calvin GILES moved to Missouri, that Jesse & family stopped at Warrenville & stayed for about a year & Calvin went on to Albany,Gentry Co,MO. It was during this time that Lavenia gave birth to a son, John CARTER b. about 1854 & Lavenia died either during childbirth or soon thereafter. He remarried to Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann CARTER 1856, Monroe Co, TN & they then moved to Albany, Gentry Co, MO. They are there in 1860 census. After the 1860 census, they moved to El Dorado, Saline Co, ILL, where Jesse joined the Union army. After the civil war this is where they lived. They traveled to Texas for a short time for Elizabeth's health. They are in El Dorado, Saline Co 1870 census & 1880 census. Elizabeth died soon after the 1880 census & Jesse married about 1881-1882 to Martha WILLIS Stewart, widow of Wakeman Stewart. Jesse died Feb 26, 1885 El Dorado, Saline Co, ILL.

     I still don't know Lavenia's maiden name.

Hi Karen... Have you looked for John Carter's death cert? If there is one available usually the parents names (including mother's maiden name) is listed... Do you know anything about John? Descendents? Maybe they would know something...

Just thought I would through that out there...

    Good luck!

    LAVINIA unknown b. 1826-1827 TN, d. abt 1856 MO

I am still trying to find Lavinia's maiden name, but so far haven't had much success. She is my 3rd G Grandmother and she m. Jesse CARTER b. 1822 TN  to Henderson CARTER & Matilda TRIM. In Jesse's pension papers is information that she died about 1856 & is buried in Howell Co,MO & that Rutherford EASLEY & Rutherford EASLEY would know of her death. There are Easleys also in Howard Co,MO so maybe that's supposed to be the burial place.

After Lavinia died Jesse married again to a Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann CARTER in Monroe Co,TN. In 1860 census they are in Albany, Gentry Co,MO. After this they moved to El Dorado, Saline Co,ILL & Jesse enlisted in the Union army in Illinois. Jesse & Lavinia's son Houston CARTER is also living there with his wife Louisa/Lenesa Kittinger (spelling?). Also there are some of the same EASLEY family that was in MO.  Jesse CARTER d. 1885 El Dorado, Saline Co, ILL.

I would appreciate any help I can get with my GGG Grandparents, Jesse CARTER & Lavinia ? CARTER.  I haven't been able to find their marriage record so far. There are a lot of Jesse CARTER & Lavinia marriages & some with a Lavinia & other name besides Jesse CARTER.
