    Naturalization question

    Saturday, August 23, 2008, 10:20 PM [General]

I was just looking at the 1900 census in New York my gggrandmother was living with her son who had already become an american at the time. It said she had come in 1888 he had become a citizen in 1889. Would she have been naturalized at the time he was, or would she have had to file her own papers?

    Thanks

    Letter to my Ancestors2

    Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 10:21 AM [General]

After spending a fustrating evening poring over illegible handwritting un badly damaged and out of focus parish records-and still not finding my relatives, I thought it was time to send an open e-mail (at www.ofcoursethere isaheaven.com) to all my (Upstairs) relatives who have gone to Heaven (99% of them) or the other place (1%). The text follows.

    "Dear _______________:

I am your _______________and living in the early 21st century here in ______________,____________-sitting in front of a microfilm projector

(I'll explain what that is in a later e-mail) in a special library run by LDS (nice people, but later on them too) trying to deciper the small shakey handwriting of your parish's minister/vicar/curate (choose one). He must have been vertically challenged or had palsy-because it's unreadaable! At least I think it's your parish! I'm not even sure of the decade.

Thanks for leaving such a good paper trail! (Sarcasm intented.) According to family legend, yoou and your husband/wife____________had ________--children,some of whom lived beyond infancy. Yet not a single one was recorded in the parish records! I can't even find for marriage certificate. You two were married right? Didn't you know that there would be legions of people like me fanatically spending their waking hours and small fortunes looking for any and all traces of your lives? Were you just stubborn, couldn't afford the fees, or not members of the Established (or any) church?

You're wondering,"What's all the fuss, we're dead as doornails?" we're not sure, but I think down here we're infected with the same disease: Rootsus obsessionus. Of course, We are going to leave better records for our descendants!

    remember when

    Sunday, July 20, 2008, 9:22 AM [General]

Growing up outside of albany NY in the late 40's I remeber a time that there was a blackout drill.

I was on the potty and the bathroom was very small with a window having morning glories growing outside of it. the blackout curtain was down and I wanted to see if the flowers were sleeping. I opened the curtain and a knock came on the door. "Floyd you have a light shinning from the bathroom" came the voice behind the knock. The board of education was given in a blink of the eye.

I always wondered how this man knew it was the bathroom. When I got into genealogy I contacted a cousin that lived behind us and would come over and push me on the swing when she got home from school. I was telling her about this and she said " That was my Dad he  was the airraid warden for our neigherhood" He was my grandmother twin brother.

    Gone With the Wind

    Saturday, July 19, 2008, 5:54 PM [General]

I have been thinking all day of Gone With the Wind. Why this movie and not another some may ask?

My grandma Shute stood about five feet in her prime. By the time I came she had been a widow for 7 years and was living with my parents and had a large hump back. when my parents went out she was my caregiver.

I never remember hearing her rIse her voice and never a bad wood from her mouth. Lady is the word that fits her more than any.

My cousins Bill and Don Zapp both large men even as teens took her to see her first talking picture show. When they came out of the show she laid them out with her mouth and walked all over them with Blue Swede Shoes (so to speak) how dare they take her to see such a violent movie. It was yes Gone With the Wind.

Her uncle Alexander had had fought with the 65th NY reginment as well as her husbands uncle. She was born one year after the war ended

Another memory of Grandma is when dad first put in indoor plumming. a rat came up in the toilet bowl Grandma. went and got her shotgun and killed the rat as well as the toilet. Needless to say Dad was not happy.
