    Frustration

    Sunday, August 10, 2008, 11:05 PM [General]

I wish there was a way that we could just go back in time and meet our ancestors and then we would know for sure who was who. I have been searching my Rhea family and have so much conflicting marriages that I wonder who married who. Example: I found an article that said Henry Dill Rhea was married to Elizabeth Adams daughter of Daniel Easley Adams and Sarah Ingram, now this info came out of a reputable magazine article, but while searching on Ancestry, a person who said they are an expert at genealogy, says that Elizabeth Adams-Rhea was the daughter of James and Sarah Ingram-Adams. Now I find that more and more families name after each other which makes it a hole lot more confusing. If I could just step back in time and meet these folks then I would know who was married to who and then there would not be all the brick walls. I would be able to find parents for the ones missing parents and I would know exactly who my Greatgreats are.  I would also have the pleasure of seeing first hand what live was like and how they felt about life.  I know everyone wishes the same thing that has run into these brick walls that sometimes needs a jack hammer to break them down.  I am so glad for message boards and sites like this one that maybe answers will come by way of a new cousin. A TIme Machine would be great.

How well I know the feeling! On my biological father's side, my greatgrandfather Alvie Mitchell, who is my grandmother's father, is a brickwall. I still haven't found his father! Alvie's mother, my GGgrandmother Amanda (Mandy) McAnally had several children. So I guess it would be she I would love to go back in time to meet. Some people I have talked to about her has said she had to have an unsavory past. We can't find a father for any of her children. I do know she was married at one time to a Pierce but he is not any of her children's father. Some of her children went by the name McAnally and some used Mitchell. I found my greatgrandfather in 1900 cencus using the name Pierce. In 1880 I found my gggrandmother in the household of Mitchells. Her 3 children at the time were using the last name of McAnally. My greatgrandfather was born later in Indian Territory. Now that covers a whole lot of places.

Do we have to pick just one? If I could, I truely believe I'd wear the machine out. There are so many questions and so many brick walls that make you wonder. The first would be to go back and put a hurtin' on my gggggrandmother's second husband (he is also an uncle - she married brothers) William Lawson Shelton abandoned his wife with another man's wife and was never heard from again (according to pension records). The next would be back to 1813 and find out where grandpa Daniel Kempton was actually born and who his parents were. The 3rd would be to 1860 and find out truely why Herman Peterson (Perrson) changed his name to Herman Lindmark (his dad and brother did the same thing) This change occurred between June 1860, when census was taken, and September 1860, when he married Elizabeth Baker. I know that there are others but those 3 come to mind right now.

    Taylor made Rice

Quick insight on this side of the family.

Cornelius Bonapart Rice born New York to unknown parents married Jane Elizabeth Mozingo in Distict of Columbia in 1847. The earliest census is 1850, after they are married,  there is an E. Mozingo, age 50, that I figure to be Jane's mother and a S. Mozingo that we know is Jane's younger brother Samuel Gideon Mozingo. Jane, E. and Samuel are all born in Virginia. Cornelius and Jane moved to Black Jack, Kansas around 1856-57 and had thier youngest son Gideon Newton Rice in 1867 in Black Jack, Kansas. Gideon married Celia Ann Bolin/Bolen, born in Ohio thier oldest son Lee Maynard married Ada Elizabeth Foster thier oldest son Paul Lee Rice married Berniece Opal Taylor, youngest daughter of my Mixed up bunch, and they had 1 daugher who had me. If we could just figure out Cornelius and Jane's parents I would be on my way to a hole in a 40 year search by other family members. My 3rd cousins have looked so long and hard but nothing comes up except a Newton Mozingo and Elizabeth Smith but we can't find any proof and Cornelius we can't find anything on any type of parentage since he always said his parents died when he was about 3 and that would be before 1830. Any and all help would be very much appreciated as I would like to help the other family members with more than just my direct line forwards. I am lost and am hoping some one will know something that I have overlooked.

Aren't you sweet? I am telling you, I am still guilty of the same thing, even tho I know better now. Those general questions just never really get you anywhere you want to be.

I practice on my husband who doesn't ever like to tell you about anything to do with his childhood.....no special reason why...he is just not a talker and hates "living in the past". Are we mismatched or what? So I am learning the right questions to ask to get him started, and then you can't shut him up.

Other questions...like who was your best friend in grade school and why? Did you still stay close to them when you got to High School? What kind of things did y'all do together for fun?

Did you ever go on a blind date?

Draw me a floor plan of the first house you remember living in? Or the first house you and your spouse lived in.

    Who were your neighbors?

Did you ever know anyone who was divorced when you were young?

I think my own kids got really tired of "I remember" when they were young. My grandkids are a little more inclined to think it's cool. Maybe by the time my great grandchildren arrive they will actually listen.

One of the neatest stories my grandfather told us.....and it isn't a big deal at all....was when his pa was clearing land. They piled the brush and burned it. They left him that nite in the field to watch the fire and be sure it didn't get out of hand. He was 16 at the time. He said he brought a newspaper to pass the time and he remembered the headline and main story was on the sinking of the Titanic. He went on to tell his thoughts and so forth. I thought that was so neat, because I just never thought of a country boy in Georgia even knowing about the Titanic. I know...narrow minded aren't I? But stuff like that,,,,,,those stories just dont' get told, no one thinks to ask.

If I think of any others that get a good response then I'll post.

I have started trying to ask older people the questions about things that usually bring memories to my mind about my life.
